Thor's Rock: The Geology of Thurstaston Common

Learn more about the geology of Thurstaston with Dr Hilary Davies from Liverpool Geological Society.
From the car park we will climb to the viewpoint at the top of the hill, in order to look at the overall impact of the underlying geology on the scenery around the Dee estuary. We will then tour Thurstaston Common looking at various outcrops of red sandstone.

Hilbre Island Walk (Adults only)

The group leaves the slipway at West Kirby at low tide and walks two miles across the sands to Hilbre Island. Hundreds of seals are hauled out on the sand banks of the River Dee Estuary at this time of year and can be clearly seen with the help of a telescope. Many more swim around to the end of the island where you can get closer to them.

The Beauty of Heswall's Heathland

We will enjoy a walk through Cleaver Heath and the Heswall Dales, where the heather will be in flower and discuss the flora and fauna of lowland heaths, as well as their management. All the while, we will be enjoying spectacular views across the Dee Estuary. Cleaver Heath nature reserve is owned and managed by Cheshire Wildlife Trust while Heswall Dales Local Nature Reserve is managed by Wirral Borough Council both with the help of volunteers.

Volunteers from Friends of Hilbre will staff the old telegraph station lookout building and offer seal watching throught the telescope, weather permitting.
Leave West Kirby after: 12 noon
Leave Hilbre before: 4pm
At all other times check the tide times and always use the safe crossing route.

Heritage Walk - An industrial Legacy to Bee and Butterfly Haven

New Ferry Butterfly Park
The tour will explore the industrial history of this former railway goods yard (brick-making and railway operations), and how this has contributed to the wildlife diversity of the park. Short walk of only about 600m, but much to see.
Tea and cakes provided at the end of the tour.
The lower half of the Park is disabled-accessible.
Car and cycle parking available on reserve. Good public transport links available. Map of location.
