Programme 2007-08

25th October 2007
Aparajito: India: 1956
104 mins: B & W. E.S.T. Dir: Satyajit Ray. With Smaran Ghosal, Karuna Bannerjee, Kanu Bannerjee.
The second part of the Ray's celebrated Apu trilogy. The film focuses on Apu's relationship with his mother and the sharp contrasts between his simple country background and the bustle of city life. Ray paints a fascinating picture of Indian life, considering the clash between Western and traditional ideas with the same humanism that characterises all his work.

8th November 2007
Bombon El Perro: Argentina/Spain: 2004
93 mins: Colour: E.S.T. Dir Carlos Sorin. With Juan Villegas, Walter Donado, Pascual Condito, Mariela Diaz.
This award winning film is an understated, intensely human depiction of "life's little miracles". A garage mechanic is given a dog for a favour, but the dog is of noble pedigree, a potential dog show winner........

22nd November 2007
Everything Is Illuminated: U.S.A.: 2005
101 mins: Colour: part E.S.T. Dir Lief Schreiber. With Elijah Wood, Eugene Hutz, Boris Leskin, Laryssa Lauret.
A whimsical story of a neurotic young writer's journey to Ukraine to delve into his grandfather's wartime past which brings him into contact with a slipshod Ukrainian tourism outfit, a guide, his apparently blind grandfather and a lunatic dog.

6th December 2007
Joveux Noel (Happy Christmas): France/ Belgium/Germany/Romania: 2006
115 mins: Colour: E.S.T. Dir Christian Carion. With Diane Kruger, Benno Furmann, Guillaume Canet,.
An anti-war movie based on a true story staged round the ceasefire during Christmas 1914. The film follows the principal characters from the time of their call-up. Singing of carols by both sides and a football match happen as history tells but who believed it at the time? A moving and inspiring film.

3rd January 2008
Volver: Spain: 2006
121 mins: Colour: E.S.T. Dir. Pedro Almodovar. With Penelope Cruz, Lola Duenas, Blanca Portillo, Carmen Maura.
Family skeletons are unearthed in this comedy drama. The director's signature style remains intact during the slow-burn towards a subdued yet intensely touching finale in this flawlessly cast mix of farce, melodrama and emotional crescendos.

17th January 2008
A Taste of Honey: U.K.: 1961
96 mins: B & W. Dir. Tony Richardson with Rita Tushingham, Dora Bryan, Murray Melvin, Robert Stephens, and a 6 year old Hazel Blears!
A ground-breaking and powerful movie of its time. Tushingham makes her debut as an unwanted daughter with a passionate love of life against the background of the industrial landscape of Salford and the promenade at Blackpool. This comedy romance survives as a priceless barometer of England in 1961.

31st January 2008
Together With You: China: 2002
113 mins: Colour. E.S.T. Dir. Chen Kaige. With Liu Peiqi, Tang Yun, Chen Hong.
A provincial peasant sacrifices all so that his son can study the violin. The boy is forced to choose between art and money in contemporary Beijing. A drama to relish.

Machuca: Chile/Spain/U.K./France: 2004
115 mins: Colour. E.S.T. Dir. Andres Wood. With Matias Quer, Ariel Mateluna, Manuela Martelli, Aline Koppenheim.
Set in Chile against the background of the fall of the Allende government in 1973. Viewing events from a child's perspective, charting the growing friendship between rich and poor as two boys develop a friendship within school. Wood captures the period mood well with some bombastic political rhetoric.

28th February 2008
A Prairie Home Companion: U.S.A.:2006
105 mins: Colour. Dir Robert Altman. With Garrison Keillor, Tommy Lee Jones and Meryl Steep.
At the final broadcast of the radio show, everyone is keen to give the show a good send-off in this comedy drama. This last film of Robert Altman hits a high note.

13th March
Das Leben der Anderan (The Lives Of Others): Germany: 2007
134 mins: Colour. Dir. Florian H.Von Don-nesmarck.
A gripping thriller set in East Germany during the Cold War. The all-powerful state is keen to preserve its artistic talents but also to see they toed the line. A riveting film reaching a rewarding climax.
