Farmers' Markets
On this page

A farmers' market is a market in which farmers, growers or producers from a defined local area are present in person to sell their own produce, direct to the public. All products sold should have been grown, reared, caught, brewed, pickled, baked, smoked or processed by the stallholder.

They provide the opportunity to meet real producers selling what they produce locally, buy the best quality local fresh produce, support local producers and reduce food miles.

In practice, Birkenhead Market have a monopoly on markets in most of Wirral, thanks to legislation which prevents the unauthorised establishment of a rival market within 6 and 2/3 miles. Wirral Council has indicated that they would join in any legal action against such a market.
