Melrose Hall Renewal

The revival of Melrose Hall began in March 1999 after the hall had been closed for 2 years and demolition was a strong possibility.

We realised that the work had to be done quickly if we were to re-open and fully utilise the hall once again.

Lottery funding and grants would take too long to achieve and, as the building was no longer financially viable, we would not be successful in applying for outside funding.

On a wing and a prayer we re-opened the hall in September 1999 and have worked continuously ever since to raise the money to completely refurbish the hall.

So far we have raised in excess of £45-000 for work to be done by volunteers and kind business friends. This has resulted in the rewiring and electric central heating and hot running water for all facilities. New toilets, for the main hall, have been completed and the kitchen has been fully tiled and fitted with cooker and microwaves and cutlery and crockery. Double glazing of all Windows, a fire alarm system and a security alarm system are all now in place.

Work has been done on the stage and as demand grows we will continue to improve. Curtains, carpets, chairs and tables and redecoration are completed and we now have a Wide screen film unit for film shows.

The roofs on the large hall and the small hall have been renewed with a 20 year guarantee. The floors in main hall, ante room , conservatory, entrance hall and kitchen have been relaid to the latest criteria.

The facilities for the disabled from the small hall include a special toilet and ramp and hidden bell for access through the small hall. There is a car park in front of the small hall for easy access for the disabled.

In our opinion had we gone for grants and waited and used commercial estimates etc the value of this work would have been in excess of £200,000 and as yet none of it would have been done!!!!
To open the doors each month we need to raise £450-00 for heating, lighting, insurance and water rates which we now achieve through lettings.

We have buildings and liability insurance, Fire Certificate, Fire Protection Certificate, Gaming and Lotteries Licence and a Public Entertainment Licence, which has now been converted to a Premises Licence under the new act.

The group responsible for all this success consists of Jackie Hall responsible for the refit and payment of bills, Shirley Fullarton for catering and fundraising, Vicky Clarke for licenses, advertising and fundraising, Stuart Routledge for maintenance supervision.

We work together as a team and decisions are rapidly made without the eternal discussions!!!!

THANK YOU TO ALL OUR SUPPORTERS.

NOW ENJOY THE FRUITS OF OUR LABOURS.
